Waymo “L4” “Fully Autonomous” Vehicle Hits Scooter Driver

Waymo apparently hit a scooter driver.

Wow . . . right after $2.5B in new funding? (Which is maybe 2 years of funding and only slightly delays the self-inflicted bankruptcy.

What needs to be known here is the exact sensors being used. Many use poor fidelity radar that cannot discern stationary/crossing objects. Few have FMCW radar that can do same. Waymo only says their LiDAR can identify objects.

Apparently, this was one of the 90% or so systems that still uses a “safety driver”. What happened there? (Update-it is being reported that the “safety driver” had just switched to manual prior to making the left turn at an intersection.) But where was AEB?

This is why we need laws that mandate the release of tested scenarios, all disengagements and conduct a “driver’s test”.

My company is Dactle

We are building an aerospace/DoD/FAA level D, full L4/5 simulation-based testing and AI system with an end-state scenario matrix to address several of the critical issues in the AV/OEM industry I mentioned in my articles below. This includes replacing 99.9% of public shadow and safety driving. As well as dealing with significant real-time, model fidelity and loading/scaling issues caused by using gaming engines and other architectures. (Issues Unity will confirm. We are now working together. We are also working with UAV companies). If not remedied these issues will lead to false confidence and performance differences between what the Plan believes will happen and what actually happens.
