NHTSA Opens Probe on Tesla’s “Autopilot” Crashes with Parked Emergency Vehicles
The article — US opens formal probe into Tesla Autopilot system — https://seekingalpha.com/pr/18436888-us-agency-opens-formal-probe-tesla-autopilot-system
NHTSA says it has identified 11 crashes since 2018 in which Teslas on Autopilot or Traffic Aware Cruise Control have hit vehicles at scenes where first responders have used flashing lights, flares, an illuminated arrow board or cones warning of hazards. The agency announced the action Monday in a posting on its website. (Note-One of the 8 police cars was shoved into an ambulance. Pure luck no one was killed in any of the crashes.)
While this is a positive development, NHTSA, and to a slightly lesser degree the NTSB, has been an enabler of Tesla’s “Autopilot” and “Full Self Driving” debacle. As the article mentions it has had several other “Investigations” open for a very long time. How long does it take to use common sense? Or setting that aside, grab a Tesla, a test track and some of these vehicles. It would take a day to confirm the sensor system is a nightmare. (Not counting the whole development approach is untenable from a cost, time, safety and technical POV.) Unfortunately, it appears NHTSA like the industry will need a small child or family killed before they do something significant.
