Tesla Kills Police Officer in China. Autopilot or not, AEB is Failing

A police officer in China was hit and killed by a Tesla. Whether “autopilot” was engaged is not known yet. What does seem to be a pretty fair bet though is, L1/ADAS Automatic Emergency Braking (AEB) keeps failing. This is likely due to the fatally flawed sensor system design that cannot handle stationary and crossing objects. This is due to the systems inability to discern lateral position well. Meaning it cannot tell if an object is in or next to the lane for example. When that happens, it avoids the false positive braking by ignoring the data. With no LiDAR, a poor fidelity radar, a camera system that struggles as well AND now Elon saying they are removing radar from the loop, these deaths tragedies will increase. (In fairness to Tesla, others have the same issue. However, they are usually in L1/ADAS only systems or in highway ODDs where issues are far less likely.)

A little while back Tesla said it was evaluating the Arbe dense array radar. Then they dropped that. If that device produces a macro pint cloud and macro classifies objects as they say it can, none of these crashes would be happening. Why did Elon abandon the Arbe? I think it is for a variety of reasons.

· They do not want to bear the cost of retrofitting over 750,000 vehicles. Maybe even have to redesign the main board.

· They do not want to produce discovery that would support lawsuits by acknowledging the issue.

· Elon does not want to admit he is wrong

· Elon wants the government to shut them down so he can use it as an out. This to avoid the $10k AP/FSD refunds and to admit they will never get close to L4.

Unfortunately, it appears the world, especially NHTSA and congress in the US, will keep ignoring this until the first family or child is killed. Making matters worse is the press rarely covers these events and AEB failure.

Of course, all this is avoidable if the right development approach is used. Something I have been saying for a while and DoT VOICES started saying recently.
